Why now
Brief
Written by a research agent on Oct 2 from the sources below. A second agent checked each claim.
Rosota is a Seoul startup, described by press and its own site as a spin-off of the MediSC lab at Seoul National University Hospital. Press reports say it is developing SurgiLogger, a device that attaches to existing laparoscopic instruments and records motion, force and video, to train a surgical robotics foundation model.
Why it fits
The fit is robotics, not defense, energy or manufacturing. A preprint under review reports a policy trained on 849 logger-recorded demonstrations completing an appendectomy in three of four live rabbits, with the surgeon selecting each surgical phase.
Stage and round
Seed stage. On 2 July 2026 Korean press reported a KRW 1.5 billion seed round led by FuturePlay with Schmidt and ZDVC (WowTale's English edition gives $965K). No valuation or terms were reported. Press later reported selection for a Seoul Business Agency Silicon Valley accelerator program with 500 Global (4 August 2026) and for the TIPS R&D general track (2 October 2026, amount not stated).
Ask on the first call
- 01Who owns the logger, the data pipeline and the policy work, Rosota or SNU Hospital? All ten Rosota-affiliated preprint authors also list a hospital or university affiliation.
- 02Money Today says founded May 2026, the CEO's page says CEO since January 2025. When was the company incorporated, and who is full time today?
- 03Has the device been used in human surgery, and under what approvals? The logger preprint says operating-room validation remains future work.
- 04Is the business an AI-native surgical robot or a foundation model supplied to other companies? What stays proprietary given both appendectomy training corpora are publicly released?
Risks
- –Evidence is early and narrow. The in-vivo result is one rollout in each of four rabbits on a single day (three completed). All six preprints are not yet accepted.
- –The only reported funding is the KRW 1.5 billion seed and a TIPS grant (size undisclosed). The stated goal is a surgical robot. No source read gives a regulatory plan.
- –Closely tied to the hospital lab. The site lists the CEO as still enrolled in medical school. No source read states how IP, data rights or staff time are split.
Could not confirm
- ?The founding date is not confirmed. Money Today says May 2026, the CEO's page lists his role from January 2025. No registry record or company statement was found.
- ?No source gives the co-founders' titles or current roles, or states whether co-founder Lee Dong-ho is the preprint author Dongho Yee.
- ?The CEO's personal page says Rosota was selected for the KISED Deep-Tech Startup Package program. This is self-reported and not confirmed elsewhere.
